DANNY CAREY OF TOOL AND BRANN DAILOR OF MASTODON HIT THE TUBS TOGETHER WITH VOLTO
Tool’s Danny Carey and Mastodon’s Brann Dailor discuss their recent Guitar Center Drum Off performance and where the collaboration came from. |
In one of the most powerful performances at the 2009 Guitar Center Drum Off, Tool’s Danny Carey and Mastadon’s Brann Dailor took the stage along with Carey’s backing band from his side project, the prog rock band Volto. Performing three songs each with heavy drum grooves and improvistation, both Carey and Dailor showed the sell out crowd why they are two of the top drummers in the Rock genre. Having toured together in the past, the two have built a friendship on a foundation of music and it clearly showed how much fun they have performing together onstage at the same time, which can be a rare occurance for two drummers from two of the worlds most successful hard rock bands. |
Before hitting the stage, Tool’s Danny Carey talked about jamming some drums with a few of his friends and he also revealed who his favorite drummer is. |
“Oh, just doing a little drumming with my friends, that’s about it. All these guys that are playing tonight I guess. Bill Bruford’s my favorite.” |
Mastadon’s Brann Dailor also talked about hitting some tubs with his friend and how much fun he has performing with Volto. |
“A lot of rolls with extra butter and stuff like that. Me and Danny are going to smack some tubs up you know. I don’t know we’re going to play some songs and Danny has another band called Volto that play around town occassionally. It’s really proggy stuff with a lot of space for us to open up and play off of each other and solo and stuff like that. We’ve toured together in the past and we’ve done stuff together before but all this last week we’ve been jammin’ together. It’s been fun!” |
Volto are a progressive jazz fusion quartet, featuring Tool’s drummer Danny Carey along with Kirk Covington, Lance Morrison, and John Ziegler who perform mainly in Jazz clubs in the Los Angeles area. The band has been embraced by the Jazz community even though they have an underground following. Brann Dailor and Mastadon will be hitting the road on a serious of tour dates beginning Jan 15th in New Zealand before heading over to Europe for a run of shows beginning Feb 4th in Italy. Mastadon will also hit the road with Metallica March 3rd in Mexico. |
