COMMON SAYS HIP HOP IS PART OF THE DREAM
Common says hip hop is the manifestation of Dr. King’s dream because it brings people together. |
Common and the Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am recently collaborated on the lead single, “A Dream,” from the Freedonm Wroters soundtrack. Interestingly enough, the song features the voice of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. |
In recognition of the King holiday, Common explained how hip hop is a manifestation of Dr. King’s dream. He said, |
“I know when Dr. King talked about, you know, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, people coming together, just coming together and not having barriers in between them. I think that and I don’t want to say I was the first person to say this cause I even heard Will say this. That hip hop is sort of part of that Martin Luther King dream because hip hop has been a bridge to bring together Black people, white people, Japanese, you know I mean just Asian in general, just Latino. It’s been a voice for so many a people and such a bridge like where you know at my concert, it’s white kids, it’s Latino kids, it’s Asian kids and we all sharing the same experience, you know. I think hip-hop is part of that dream, you know, being seen bringing people together.” |
Common is currently working on a new album titled, Finding Forever, which is due out in May. The rapper makes his big screen debut in Smokin’ Aces later this month. The film also stars Ben Affleck, Alicia Keys, Taraji Henson, and Jeremy Piven. |
