COLDPLAY NUMBER ONE, HELPS ATTAIN RARE CHART FEAT
Coldplay’s Viva La Vida has topped the Billboard 200 album chart selling over 700,000 copies. |
Coldplay easily cruised to Number One on the Billboard 200 chart with the release of their new album Viva La Vida. It sold 721,000 albums in its first week making it the second straight 700,000 plus debut, in the footsteps of Lil’ Wayne. It is only the second time the back-to-back feat has been done since the creation of Soundscan in 1991. The album has become the biggest selling digital debut album of all time selling 288,000 via electronic delivery. |
Coldplay’s last album X&Y also moved over 700,000 copies upon its release in 2005. In a previous interview the band was asked about their album sales success. |
“It’s kind of… We’re English so we get embarrassed talking about success. So we don’t want to talk about it.” |
Coldplay recently celebrated the release of Viva La Vida with a free concert at New York City’s Madison Square Garden earlier in the week. It will launch its North American tour with two sold out dates at The Forum in Los Angeles on July 14th and 15th. |
