CLOONEY CAMPAIGNS FOR GOOD WOMEN ROLES
George Clooney says all the good roles for women disappeared in the 1940s, except for The Good German giving one to Cate Blanchett. |
George Clooney stars in The Good German which takes place in Berlin 1945. The style of the film is reminiscent of the old classic movies of the forties like Casablanca. George plays a journalist on assignment in the newly liberated Europe and by coincidence he runs into his old flame played by Cate Blanchett. |
George says they just don’t make movies anymore for the women of today. Luckily he says Cate has the style of an old-fashioned 40s movie star. |
“At the time in the forties six of the top box office stars were women. And they commanded that kind of salary and parts were written for them. That’s not at all the truth anymore. Women, their parts aren’t nearly as good as the guys’ parts right now for the most part. There are certainly great women’s roles but not as many of them and women are getting the short end of the stick. That’s why this is such a great thing for Cate. Even she as an actress is like an old style Hollywood actress which is she doesn’t beat you up with this, ‘I have to speak German all day long’ and I’m suffering for my art kind of thing you know. She’s got her kids running around. She’s telling a joke.” |
The feeling is mutual for how women feel about George which is why he’s won the title of sexiest man alive for the second time. George recalls the first time it happened and says he’ll never get used to seeing his picture on the cover of a magazine. |
“The minute it happened, the calls I got. Brad Pitt taking out ads in the trades. It’s just brutal, but I’m getting them back one by one. I’m taking ‘em down. I remember the first cover I was ever on was Newsweek with ER and I was at the airport and we were walking by where the glass partition is and you saw The Newsweek cover and there was the whole cast of the show. It’s still one of those things where you don’t quite know what to make of it. In general you find the longer you’ve been in that position the more embarrassing it is. You’re less and less fascinated by your own picture. You’d rather sort of get away from that.” |
The roles keep coming for George who’ll play an attorney in Michael Clayton, revisit Danny Ocean in Ocean’s 13 and then onto directing Leatherheads, a romantic comedy with Renee Zellwegger. |
