CLERKS FANS SAID ‘WHY BOTHER’ WITH SEQUEL
When writer director Kevin Smith set out to write the sequel to his underground 1994 hit Clerks about convenience store slackers, the fans put their two cents in to the uncensored scribe saying why mess with the original. |
Obviously Smith went ahead and wrote Clerks 2 returning to his New Jersey roots which continues the lives of Dante and Randall now 30 something slackers confronting more adult situations like contemplating alternative jobs when a fire destroys their workplace. Kevin says he’s just exploring his own passage of time. |
“When I was writing Clerks 2 alot of people were like why bother because we announced it before I had written the script. There are people that feel very protective of the first movie. What worked so well for us with people finding Clerks is there is this kind of discovery element to it where everyone felt like they were the first person to see that movie and then everyone wanted to tell people about it. So there’s a real sense of ownership to the flick. When I said I’m gonna do this Clerks sequel some people got up in arms about it, like don’t do that man. If this movie sucks then people will go hating on the original or what not.” |
Clerks 2 opens today. |
“I thought since Clerks was about me trying to tell a story of what I felt it was like to be in my twenties at that point, Dante and Randall seemed like the best way into a similar story about me heading into my thirties and writing about what I felt it was like to be in my thirties.” |
