CHRIS CORNELL DOES AN ABOUT FACE: SOUNDGARDEN CONFIRMS REUNION
Chris Cornell announces the return of Soundgarden will happen in 2010 and he talks about the bands creative power |
At the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2010, Chris Cornell rang in the New Year in style by posting on his Twitter and Facebook the following message “The 12 year break is over & school is back in session. Knights of the Soundtable ride again!” which included a link to the newly designed www.soundgardenworld.com. Although no further details have been announced as of press time, clearly the news has created quite a stir, as for the past twelve years fans have been wondering when the lineup of vocalist Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Ben Sheperd along with current Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron, who became Soundgarden’s permanent drummer in 1986. Soundgarden achieved its biggest success with the 1994 album, “Superunknown”, which debuted at number one on the Billboard charts and yielded the Grammy Award-winning singles “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoonman”. To date, Soundgarden have sold over eight million records in the United States and an estimated twenty million worldwide. |
In an earlier interview, Chris Cornell caught up with Artisan News to share his thougts on the creative powers Soundgarden. |
“You know we were able to have a career with Soundgarden and make records all the way up to the last one that I feel were totally vital and totally creative and daring records. I think the last record was the best one and the band produced it and mixed it and it was the most cohesive the band ever was on that last record. Then we kind of just put it away unscathed and untainted.” |
For the past 12 years, Cornell has stayed away for a Soundgarden reunion because he didn’t want to tamper with the bands legacy. It seems his views have now changed and he talked about a reunion not making sense to him at the time. |
“It’s something that not one member of Soundgarden has ever brought up. I’ve never gotten a phone call from any of them with an interest in doing a show or even a song or anything. Everybody’s busy doing what they are doing. I guess I don’t really see any reason for it. I think the only reason would be for the fans but I feel like that’s kind of a double edged sword in a way. I can’t imagine what would be a good enough reason to take that back out and start tampering with it now. You know that doesn’t really make sense to me.” |
It recently surfaced that Chris Cornell and his wife, Vicky, are extremely upset and have threatened legal action after discovering their wedding video was being offered on Craigslist as “lost” footage of the recently deceased actress Brittany Murphy, who was a maid of honor at their 2004 ceremony. Cornell claimed the video was stolen and he threatened to sue the popular site, which has removed the video from sale. Cornell and he associates are currently trying to subpeona the name of the person who was selling the video so they can persue legal action. Look for Soundgarden to hopefully announce a Summer reunion tour in 2010 with rumors already circulating about a possible performance at Coachella |
