CHEVELLE ON CBGB RESCUE
Chevelle took time out of their busy schedule to help save embattled New York City club CBGB, but a New York State Court has given the club hope of staying in business. CBGB was a hotbed of rock stardom in the ’70s, launching the careers of Blondie, Talking Heads, and the Ramones, among others, but a recent dispute with a landlord has threatened the existence of the club. The club recently won the first round of proceedings in a New York court whereby the judge ruled that owner Hilly Krystal doesn’t owe back-rent, which was raised without his knowledge. |
It seems the series of high profile shows at the club have raised awareness. One of those playing the club was Chevelle. Drummer Sam Loeffler talked about getting involved in the concert series to save the club. |
“Well basically, our management called and said, ‘Do you know what’s going on with CBGBs?,’ We said, ‘no.’ and At and they explained it to us, and they said, ‘So they’re trying to get some bands to play, do you want to do it?” We said, ‘Absolutely. If we can help out.’ And if nothing else, at the very, very least, to at least just sort of pay homage to that whole thing. So much good stuff came out of that. At least we get to be part of the end of it, if it ends.” |
When asked what Loeffler thought of the club’s situation, he said that somebody definitely has an agenda against the club. |
“What I’ve heard is that it’s a lot more complicated than rent, that somebody else is pushing them out. Probably it won’t work, but it is what it is.” |
Chevelle recently released “Panic Prone,” the latest single from their album, This Type Of Thinking Could Do Us In. |
