CHANTAL KREVIAZUK ON THE ART OF SONG WRITING

Perhaps best known for writing hit songs for Avril Lavaigne, Kelly Clarkson and Gwen Stefani, Chantal Kreviazuk finally takes some time for herself with her latest release ‘Ghost Stories.’ Chantal, who hails from Canada and was a piano prodigy at an early age shares a continuous theme of Ghosts on her latest release, which debuted at #2 on the Canadian Album Sales Chart. For ‘Ghost Stories’ the entire album was produced by Chantal’s husband and Our Lady Peace member Raine Maida at their home studio, which undoubtedly allowed Chantal certain liberties she couldn’t have had at other studios. |
We caught up with Chantal recently to discuss song writing with other artists and the practice of song writing for her solo career. |
“I like them both. I mean they both present a challange and a practice of song writing and to song writing. So in a sense, one sort of practice is helping the other. So, it’s more like here’s the umbrella of song writing and here’s different imprints of it or something, like writing for someone or writing for myself. It’s hard to explain, but I see it as a bigger picture.” |
Chantal also admitted that ‘Ghost Stories’ is her most authentic representation as a song writer yet and it has a lot to do with being experimental in the confines of her home studio. |
“I think this album is a little more experimental and that’s because I was recording it at home with my husband so I just felt a lot of liberty to explore a bit more. I think it’s one of the more authentic representations of me as a person and as a writer than compared to anything in the past.” |
Chantal recently concluded her tour in support of ‘Ghost Stories’ with Five for Fighting. Chantal’s has a few dates in Canada booked including Edfest, July 22nd in Edmonton, AB Canada. |
