BRANDI CARLILE ON THE CUSP
Brandi Carlile was named Yahoo’s emerging artist of the month, and she’s had more positive reviews of her self-titled debut than anyone in recent memories. Brandi’s first offering is “Fall Apart Again,” and with that song and the rest on the album, she got to work with producer Rick Rubin. |
Carlile talked to us about the invaluable advice she got from Rubin. |
“He was never in the studio. It was like one of those things where we’d go in and record and send him mixes and he’d call and spend an hour on the phone with me, giving me advice, and I just… I’ll never forget the valuable things I’ve learned in talking with him about production and how to record your music.” |
While she released “Fall Apart Again,” as her first single many fans will tell you it’s not the best on the album. She talked about the song and admitted that it’s not really hers. |
“‘Fall Apart Again’ is a song that… I have two twin brothers in my band, Phil and Tim Hanseroth. Phil Hanseroth wrote that song and I would go out and see their band play before the three of us played together, and I loved it before we even played together. And once we started to play together, I finally got the nerve up to ask Phil if I could sing the song. And he said ‘yes’ I could but and that was a great idea and we should start writing together and I could do any of the songs that I wanted to do. And sort of opened the door to the twins and me writing songs together, “Fall Apart Again,’ did to me in that respect.” |
Carlile is currently out supporting the album, and she’ll be on the road through December 12, wrapping up in Keane, New Hampshire. |
