BEYONCE AND JENNIFER KNEW THEY HAD TO BE DREAMETTES
Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson both knew they wanted to play Dreamettes and went for it. Keywords:Anika Noni Rose, Danny Glover, Destiny’s Child, Diana Ross. |
Beyonce can relate to the drive and focus Dreamette Deena had in Dreamgirls to create a singing group as she did the same thing with Destiny’s Child. Based loosely on Diana Ross and The Supremes, Beyonce moves out in front as the lead singer of The Dreamettes and becomes the star of the threesome. |
Beyonce says she knew the role was hers and she worked for it. |
“I knew that this part was my part. I knew it was something I had been preparing for with the other roles that I had done. I knew that it had so many layers and it gave me an opportunity to really act and show what I could do dramatically.” |
In many ways Jennifer Hudson was born to play Effie in Dreamgirls as they both worked hard to break out of their humble beginnings. They both used their superb singing voices to get noticed; Jennifer as an American Idol contestant and Effie of course as a Dreamette. Jennifer talks about why she had to play Effie. |
“Because Effie’s story is similar to my story. We’ve kind of had the same path; maybe not as dramatic or drastic as hers but it’s very similar and I felt like nobody could tell her story better than I could. And that’s why I really wanted Effie. If you have a dream you can achieve that goal. You just got to go for it. And also let you know there is a price to pay.” |
Anika Noni Rose rounds out the trio as Lorelle, the Dreamette who has an affair with married man James Early played by Eddie Murphy. Danny Glover also stars as the manager who gets cast aside when hot shot Curtis Taylor, Jr. takes on their interests. |
