Gael Garcia Bernal boned up on Navy behavior to play a military man in The King by reading the Naval Officer’s handbook. Gael knew very little about the military so he spoke with former recruits who confessed to him they’d joined the military mainly because of the film Top Gun. |
The Mexican star is very familiar with South American conflict as he played Cuban revolutionary Che Guevera twice in The Motorcycle Diaries and in the miniseries Fidel.rnrnrnrnrnrn |
“Very little compared to what I know now. I knew very little about the Navy in general. It was great to read the Naval Officer’s handbook and to read all the missions. It’s so organized and it talks about stretching and defending the interests of the United States. It has a very strong empire type of mottos. I was interested to read that and it’s so well organized and so well set up. I was interested by that. How many people what it exists right now in the Navy and are in the Navy and what do they do. It was interesting to talk with them. I just had long chats with people from the Navy and a lot of people helped us. There’s a lot of people that joined the Navy because of Top Gun.” |
