BEOWULF AND GRENDEL STARS BRAVE ICELAND
(VIDEO) Stellan Skarsgard and Sarah Polley had mixed emotions about shooting the film in the harsh weather of Iceland. |
Stellan Skarsgard who can also be seen in Pirates 2 looks like he borrowed a couple of hair ornaments from Jack Sparrow for Beowulf and Grendel as King Hrothgar, the much respected Lord of the Danes who commands Gerard Butler’s Beowulf to lead a troop of warriors across the sea to rid a village of the pillaging monster Grendel. Stellan talks about working in the harsh weather of Iceland. |
Sarah Polley who plays Beowulf’s main maiden Selma was more excited to experience the unpredictable weather of Iceland. Sarah says the harsh backdrop lends itself to the film’s message of a hero fighting against impossible odds. |
“Working in a storm with absolutely horizontal rain can add to the scene. It creates difficulties that you have to deal with and you have to scream a lot. But since the weather is what it is it works for the scene. We’ve had conditions here that you cannot create with wind machines and smoke machines and rain machines.” |
Beowulf and Grendel opens Friday. |
“There’s something totally crazy about it and really hard but there’s also something really inspiring that people are doing such amazing work under these conditions. I think it’s sort of an interesting time for this film to be made where we’re bombarded with ideas of black and white and good and evil and the bad guys and the good guys. I think this is a really good time to challenge the notion of a hero story and that kind of myth.” |
