BEN AFFLECK CUTS CASEY QUARRY LEAP
Ben Affleck cut his brother Casey’s death defying leap out of his movie, Gone Baby Gone. |
Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan had their Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid moment jumping off the side of a ravine 75 feet into the quarry below to save what they think is a drowning child. Both actors took the leap of faith except Casey’s jump only made it to the cutting room floor. |
You can’t say Ben didn’t put the movie first before his brother’s bravery because now that scene is gone, baby gone. |
“You know Michelle wanted to do her own thing but we were a little worried about it but she did it and she was really kind of brave about it. And she did it. And then Casey thought the scene would work better and we sort of thought it would work better if he did it and so we asked him to do it and he braved up and he did it also. And then we ended up taking it out so he felt a little betrayed by that. But he did do it so we’ll try to squeeze that outtake off. He risked his life for nothing.” |
In hindsight, Casey who is a father to a three year-old son ponders why he risked his life in the first place. Watching 10 year-olds jumping off without a care gave him the courage he needed. |
“I was sort of embarrassed into doing it I guess. I kind of felt like, ‘if these kids are doing it.’ But every time I got out there and got my little toes on the edge of the stone and peered down into that black water I just felt like there was death waiting for me so it was scary. I’ll tell you when I was jumping the weirdest thing happened. I was falling for so long and it sounds crazy but I thought I’d missed the water. Now there’s no way to miss the water. That’s it, it’s the water or some jagged rocks sticking out, either way I would’ve known it. But the thought actually went through my mind, ‘why am I still falling?’ This doesn’t make sense. I’d been falling for like 10 minutes. I must’ve missed the water! It was a weird experience.” |
In fact Casey had to make the death defying jump twice because the first take was ruined traveling through the X-ray machine at the Los Angeles airport which had heightened it’s security during the 4th of July weekend. |
