ANNE HATHAWAY REDISCOVERS JANE AUSTEN
In preparing to play Jane Austen, Anne Hathaway rediscoverd her as a novelist and as a woman. |
In becoming Jane Austen Anne Hathaway had to rediscover the beloved author who many of us know through her famous novels Pride and Prejudice, and Sense and Sensibility. |
Anne says she wanted to learn more about the woman behind the prose. |
“I was very well acquainted with Jane Austen’s books but like most people I had just accepted the three fact biography which is Jane Austen died when she was 41. She wrote six novels and never married. When I came across the script I just thought, ‘is this true did this really happen?’ Then I did research that said well this very possibly could’ve happened.” |
Austen’s novels about having loved and lost were way ahead of the 18th century and they still remain timeless to this day. Anne says her favorite is Persuasion which becomes even more poignant as time goes on. |
“I think Jane Austen is timeless because wit never goes out of style. What she was clever about were human truths and so you can’t argue with them well truth is truth. And so rediscovering her, also she’s very fun to go back to in your life. Once you fall in love with Jane Austen and you go back to the books you find that they become more true as you become older, as you mature as you go through different parts of your life. What had seemed in some ways just as pure entertainment is actually a very wise tale. And she’s heaven. She’s wonderful.” |
Becoming Jane is currently playing in theaters. |
