ANGELINA JOLIE UNCERTAIN ABOUT PLAYING MARIANE PEARL
Angelina Jolie wasn’t sure she could pull off the portrayal of her friend Mariane Pearl. |
Angelina Jolie struck up a friendship with Mariane Pearl before she even knew her partner Brad Pitt had bought the rights to her story, A Mighty Heart. Their children Adam and Maddox became play mates and she reached out to her as a single mom during the devastating murder of her husband Daniel. |
So when Jolie agreed to take on the role of portraying Mariane in the film she had doubts she could do justice to the woman she befriended. |
“Just so many levels of it. I guess just having the confidence. The first night I didn’t sleep at all. I just didn’t think I could get the accent down. I didn’t think I was the right person to play it. I didn’t know if I could ever find the balance of her strength and of her emotions. I didn’t know if I would convey some of the things I had come to admire in her as a woman. So there was a certain kind of pressure. I never felt like I was good enough you know. Every day I kind of woke up thinking I’m not good enough to do this.” |
Angelina says Mariane supported her silently with her portrayal of her. |
“At the same time there’s probably nobody who’s more supportive and helped me through it than her. So she was the one who never came to set, never critiqued me, never told me, ‘you can’t do this, you must do that, make sure you do this.’ She went off and she traveled around the world and she occasionally she’d write and tell me I’m in Cambodia working with a great NGO you should get to know this woman, but that was the extent of it and nothing to do with the movie and was really supportive when she saw it so she’s a great friend.” |
To look and sound like Mariane Pearl, Angelina wore a curly haired wig, brown contacs and mastered her Cuban, French accent. |
