INCUBUS, PENNYWISE AND PETER DISTEFANO SHOW SUPPORT FOR SURFRIDER FOUNDATION
The Surfrider Foundation held it’s first annual Celebrity Surf Jam on September 10th and 11th in Huntington Beach, Ca. The event brought together a mix of celebrities, professional surfers and Surfrider Foundation activists from across the country, to surf and compete with one another to help raise awareness and support for our nation’s beach and coastal environments. Brandon Boyd and Ben Kenny of Incubus, Jim Lindberg of Pennywise and Porno for Pyros’ Peter DiStefano all participated in the surf contest along with actress Mimi Driver and professional surfers Pat O‚Connell, Rob Machado, Jeff Deffenbaugh, Alex Grey and Dane Reynolds. The Santa Monica runoff runs directly into the notoriously dirty beaches of Los Angeles Bay. Jim Lindberg of Pennywise went on to discuss growing up surfing in the South Bay of Los Angeles and how important a clean environment is to our planet. |
“I gained an appreciation for the ocean through surfing and growing up surfing and growing up around the ocean. I experienced times when my local breaks were polluted and we couldn’t go in the water and you see dead birds. Even on a local level you look at that and you wonder what kind of impact we’re having over long term over generations. So, I always thought if you ruin the source of it all, you’re going to ruin the whole thing. So protect the source and the ocean.” |
Pennywise, having just released their 8th studio album, ‘Fuse’ are gearing up for a tour that will start September 17th in Arizona and conclude September 29th in New Jersey. Incubus are currently in the studio writing a new album that hopefully will be released next year. The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education. Represented by over 40,000 members and 60 local chapters in the U.S., the Surfrider Foundation also has affiliations in Australia, Japan, France, and Brazil. |
“I grew up surfing the beaches of the South Bay of Los Angeles. That was basically our playground growing up and it also has one of the largest sewage treatment plants in the world, the hyperion plant, just a half a mile down from where we surf and go to the beach everyday. So protecting the coast and the beaches there is of the utmost importance for someone like myself because there’s been times people go down there and get sick from the runoff in the water. It’s just very important to protect our most precious natural resources. So, just being a surfer and an avid beach goer, I take my family down there now, I want our kids to enjoy a clean prestine beach.” |
