U2 TAKES OVER LATE NIGHT IN A FIRST
Jimmy Fallon introduced himself to the world last night, February 17, as he took the seat of Jay Leno on The Tonight Show, with Will Smith and U2 as the main… |
U2 landed in New York this week to play six nights at the famed Madison Square Garden. Along with the shows the band also became the first group to stay and participate in an entire talk show on Thursday night for Late Night with Conan O’Brien. The show started at 12:30am and the show was all U2. |
The show contained several live performances and the band even participated in a few skits such as “The Year 2000,” during which guitarist The Edge and vocalist Bono exchanged faux insults. The band also did Q&A for O’Brien and the host asked about an idea for a “dead cowboy” in their stage setup. |
“It…there was an idea to…We thought it was avant garde to fly me in a cowboy hat over the audience as a dead cowboy. [Conan laughs] We thought it woudl be a one off event and it would be a historic feat, whatever.” [Conan]”You should have seen the face Larry [Mullen] just made, Larry was like, ‘I remember that!'” [Bono] “Then it was explained by our management that John Bon Jovi did this every night.” |
During the next Question and Answer period with Conan, U2 vocalist Bono was asked about his Nobel Peace Prize bid. |
“No it’s… This is an incredible honor and to be nominated I’m already way above my station. I don’t think they’re ever going to give that to a rockstar I can tell you. And there are people who probably deserve it more than I, people who work on the same issues, AIDS and poverty issues, but I don’t think it’s going to happen for an Irish rockstar. I’m so deeply honored to even be thought of.” |
Other highlights of the show were segments featuring Conan ribbing the crowd outside who were waiting for the band and revealing faux pictures of the early days with their “Flock of seagulls” look and a picture of U2’s “fat” period. |
