TWISTA ACCUSED OF STEALING CHI ROC NAME
Twista, who recently released a new album titled, The Day After, has been promoting his new label venture, Chi-Roc Entertainment, but a group in Chicago isn’t happy about his choice of names for the upstart label. According to the group, they formed the Chi Roc Hip Hop Nation in Chicago in 1985. |
Group founder Shabazz told Allhiphop.com, “I am the owner of the registered corporation ‘Chi-Rock’ or ‘Chi-Roc’, which is documented by the Illinois Secretary of State. This ‘Twista’ is tainting our legacy. My independent record company is called Chi-Rock Records.” |
“I mean one thing is like being in the middle, you know. One part of it is not a lot of industry there, you know what I’m sayin? Another part is the people where the industry is at not fully looking there for it. Then another part is being in the middle. You know you got to have something to sell somewhere. People in the east come here and sell it. People in the south come here and sell it. People in the west come here and sell it because the midwest is one of the biggest consumers when it come to rap music.” |
Twista had no comment at press time. The rapper is one of a small group of artists from Chicago including Kanye West, R. Kelly, Common, Do or Die, Crucial Conflict, and Da Brat, who have enjoyed national success. Twista explained why it took Chicago so many years to finally break through. He said, |
