Rapper and producer Kanye West dropped out of college to purse a musical career but the star still understands how important an education is and he shared that message while performing at Santa Monica High School in California on Monday (December 5th). The rapper told MTV.com, “It is true you can be successful without [college], but this is a hard world, a real world, and you want every advantage you can have. I would suggest to people to do all that you can. When I dropped out of school I had worked in the music industry and had checks cut in my name from record labels and had a record deal on the table, and when I wasn’t successful and Columbia said, ‘We’ll call you,’ I had to go back and work a telemarketing job, go back to the real world, and that’s how life is. Life is hard. Take advantage of your opportunities.” |
West’s Kanye West Foundation and Musicland have teamed up to launch the Free U. College Giveaway which will give away a $150,000 scholarship to a student next month. Fans who want a chance to win the scholarship can enter at Musicland locations. |
In addition to the scholarship, The Kanye West Foundation has its own initiative underway called the Loop Dreams projects which funds music production equipment in schools. The rapper got the idea for the initiative from his mother. |
