System Of A Down created the recently released Hypnotize and the Spring 2005 album Mesmerize as a double album spaced a half-year apart. To work on a project with two different release dates was a challenge to producer/songwriter Daron Malakian.

Malakian, who also expanded his vocal repertoire on the albums, said that the hardest part was deciding which tracks were going to go on which albums knowing both Hypnotize and Mesmerize had to stand on their own.

Hypnotize and Mesmerize became the first two separately released albums each to debut at Number One in the same year. The album currently sits at Number 14 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
