Rapper and actor Ice-T has been selected to host VH1’s 3rd Annual Hip Hop Honors which is scheduled for Saturday, October 7th at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. The show will air on VH1 on Tuesday, October 17th, at 8:00 p.m. ET. This year’s honorees include: Wu-Tang Clan, Afrika Bambaataa, Russell Simmons, MC Lyte, Rakim, Beastie Boys, and Eazy E. |
Ice-T, who was honored last year and is largely credited with creating gangsta rap, shared what the hip hop scene was like in Los Angeles in the ’80s. He said, |
“The thing about L.A. is L.A. had no hip hop culture. L.A. had a gang culture. You got to understand there was no hip hop culture. Now if you in a room full of non-hip hoppers and they all gangsters, you got to talk their lingo. When you’re dealing with an unconventional enemy, you have to use unconventional tactics. You can’t just come in, ‘Peace and all.’ Listen you got to show them force and you got to say you know, ‘If anybody is gangster in here. I’m the biggest gangster.’ And now gonna listen to you.” |
