MARC ECKO TAKES ON NEW YORK
Clothing Designer Marc Ecko is taking on New York City in a first amendment lawsuit against the city, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Councilman Peter Vallone, Jr. Ecko filed the suit on behalf of seven New York City kids. |
In December, Mayor Bloomberg signed amendments to the New York City anti-graffiti laws, which make it illegal for individuals under the age of 21 to purchase or posses spray paint or broad tipped markers. The seven plaintiffs in the case are youth ranging from 16 to 20 who used spray paint and markers to graffiti canvases, sneakers and paper. |
“As someone whose roots are based in graffiti, street design and urban art, I would have been remiss not standing up for these individuals and for this culture,” said Ecko. “That is why I have chosen to dedicate my time and resources to calling attention to the absurdity of these laws and ensuring the rights of these individuals aren’t being preemptively censored.” |
Last Summer, Ecko won a lawsuit again the Mayor Bloomberg, after the mayor attempted to stop the designer from hosting a graffiti exhibition and block party in the city. Ecko is also currently battling the city of Denver in order to host a graffiti festival in the city. |
