THURSDAY STRIPS DOWN AT TOWER RECORDS
(VIDEO) Thursday stripped down in support of their new record in NYC, but it’s not what you think… |
Thursday appeared at Tower Records this past – you guessed it – Thursday, May 4 in support of their new effort A City By The Light Divided. The album was released on Tuesday, May 2, and the band treated fans to songs from the new collection as well as those from their past records in a unique semi-acoustic setting at the store. |
Thursday singer Geoff Rickly and drummer Tucker Rule talked about the challenge of playing in a scaled down capacity. |
[Geoff] “Well for me the hardest thing is not having the big huge sound underneath you. It’s easy to sing because they have this wall of noise and nobody can even tell if I mess up because there’s so much going on, but here it’s like no Tucker laying down the beat and (bassist) Tim (Payne) is just playing all (quiet). You can actually hear me, which is a little scary sometimes. Also if you look at it just as an opportunity to do something different. It was great.” [Tucker] “I did not play so it’s fun for me to watch. Every musician wants to see their own band play, because you never get to.” [Geoff] “We have an instrumental on this record and that’s the way I felt about it. I was like, ‘I get to listen to this song,’ and be like, ‘My band is awesome and I don’t have to listen to my stupid voice (laughs).” |
The first single from the album is “Counting 5-4-3-2-1,” and the duo (also read Rickly instead of duo) talked about choosing it as the first single. |
“It was just one of those things that we’ve actually been working on that song. “counting…” has been around the band for like three or four years, kind of different thigns working on it. It was one of those things where I love the part and I love what this person plays and this person plays and it’s just not coming together as a song, and we got up there with Dave Fridmann and just let it rip. When we heard it recorded it was just like, ‘That’s probably a good song to let people hear first off the record. It’s just one of those things. It came… The recording itself when it was finished just sounded mean and fast and dirty, and we were psyched.” |
The turn-out at Tower was a little lighter than expected considering their NYC show and a secret Myspace show in New Jersey earlier in the week. |
