Mexican heart throb Gael Garcia Bernal makes his American film debut in The King. Fresh from the Navy he returns to Texas in search of his estranged father played by William Hurt and winds up falling for Hurt’s daughter. The risqué sex scenes with newcomer Pell James came naturally to the Y Tu Mama Tambien star who says he was more challenged about faking an orgasm in 30 seconds of movie time than any potential embarrassment. |
The King was shot on location in Corpus Christi Texas, the same town where Latin pop star Selena is from. On his day off Gael visited the Days Inn motel where the tragic murder occurred. |
“They weren’t that risky because we were doing it in the bed and on the stone. Maybe the stone was risky because maybe you get hurt. Those were the only risky things about it. We were on the edge of a bed so maybe that was risky because you could fall down. We just go and do them and play around. People always say, ‘you must’ve enjoyed that.’ Even if you like the person you’re doing it with there are so many people around and it’s so cold in a way. You have to get an orgasm in less than 30 seconds and we last more than 30 seconds! Audiences in the United States get very tickled with sex scenes; it moves them. I think it’s the preconceived parameters that are a bit strict and a bit contrived but people are not as puritan as it may seem.” |
