The Broadway critics and naysayers have a lot to answer for the Tony nomination given to Lestat star Carolee Carmello for featured actress in a musical. Playing the mother of the vampire Lestat, Carolee couldn’t contain her excitement with her family when she heard the news. |
Carolee thought she might also have to comfort her son when he watched his mother on stage biting people’s necks and joining the undead. |
“I was in the kitchen watching the broadcast with my husband on TV. My son was in the next room getting ready for school. He’s five years old and my husband and I screamed when we heard my name. He said, ‘what’s going on there honey?’ We’re just happy honey, we’re just happy. The tears were just streaming down our face. We just hugged and cried and consoled my son because he thought something horrible had happened!” |
Lestat is based on the book by Anne Rice and features music from Elton John. The 17th century vampire attire in the show also received a nomination for best costume design. |
“I brought him to opening night and I was a little nervous. I have a ten year old as well. My daughter had seen the show in San Francisco so I knew she would be OK with it. I was a little worried about my son seeing me near death, seeing me attacking somebody, seeing this other actor biting my neck. And he seemed fine with it.” |
