PAUL GIAMATTI GOES UNDER WATER FOR LADY IN THE WATER

Paul Giamatti stars in M. Night Shyamalan’s latest fantasy creation, Lady In The Water. Paul plays a building superintendent who discovers a strange creature in the pool he is cleaning that doesn’t appear exactly human played by Bryce Dallas Howard. Paul says he was attracted to the strange goings-on under water.

Paul spends most of the pool scene under water where he learned the skill of disassembling a pen and blowing an air bubble in an upside down beer glass that Bryce Dallas Howard has swiped for her collection. Paul describes Bryce’s character.

“When I first read the script that was the thing I liked most about the script because it’s just so bizarre and surreal. And it was the thing that seemed the most like a fairy tale to me. I have to find out that she lives under pools and all these things that live under pools. And so I go through the grating of the pool and down under this room she’s made or somebody’s made for her. And she keeps all the little things she’s stolen from the pool around, the glasses. It’s the most like a weird fairytale where the hero goes in somewhere and there’s three doors that they have to open. It feels like that kind of thing. It’s very out of the blue and surreal.”

“She at first seems like this strange young girl but something seems odd about her. But fairly quickly I start to figure out that she’s not quite human. And almost immediately when I take her outside to return her to her pool, we get attacked by a grass wolf. A wolf covered with grass, called the scrut which is this creature sent down that is sent down to try to kill her to prevent her from saving mankind.”
