LIL FLIP LEAVES SONY MUSIC
(VIDEO) Lil Flip leaves Sony Music for Asylum Records….. |
Houston-based rapper Lil Flip negotiated his release from Sony Music in June and the rapper recently explained his decision to leave the label. He said, “When I signed to Sony I already made a name for myself ’cause I sold over 150,000 units on my own without anybody’s help. Everybody wanted to sign me and I had fans. With that type of ammunition, Sony was able to take me to platinum with barely any promotion. I had two videos and went over platinum. Most rappers need three to four videos to go platinum. Imagine if someone was really behind me. At this point in my career, I can’t settle for part of a promotional campaign, and Sony would not give me 100%.” |
Flip was able to leave Sony with his latest album, I Need Mine, after paying the label an unspecified amount, but the album has since been leaked. He said, “All I know is my copy is watermarked, I didn’t leak it and the only other people that have it is Sony. The point of taking the masters was so we could release the album exactly how it was. Now we have to regroup.” |
“This album here, I’m trying to motivate all the Houston artists, you know, to try to make music that’s versatile and national, you know what I mean? So that’s what I’m doing this time around, showing people I can switch my style. I got songs where I’m rapping fast. I got a couple of stories I told. It’s not all about cars, it’s not about…. It’s a variety of music that I’m giving to you.” |
Lil Flip will now release I Need Mine next year on Asylum Records, which is distributed by Warner Music Group. |
Although he plans to revamp the album, Flip still hopes to motivate his fellow Houston rappers with his new album. He explained, |
