THE FOUNTAIN DIRECTOR TAKES AUDIENCE FOR A RIDE
From the creator of Pi and Requiem for A Dream comes The Fountain. Writer and director Darren Aronofsky created the story of a couple who find love with each other in three different time periods by simply strolling the streets of New York City. |
Darren says the story is difficult to describe and is interpreted in many ways. He recommends The Fountain as the perfect date movie. |
“Most of the creative time on The Fountain was me and a guy I created the story with a college roommate walking around Manhattan just daydreaming and talking about ideas. Lots of eurekas came up, ‘hey wouldn’t it be cool if this connected to that,’ and then you start writing it down and suddenly it starts flushing out and it becomes its own thing.” |
And according to Darren, The Fountain is not your typical romantic movie with a storybook ending. At many film festival screenings star Ellen Burstyn suggested to the audience to just sit back and let the movie do you. Darren explains what she meant. |
“The Fountain for many people is about soul mates and about love that lasts forever and it’s told through this science fiction lens and this action adventure lens and this sweeping romance. But I think the bottom line is it’s a really great date movie. It has a little bit of everything, for men and for women and then you’re kind of guaranteed a conversation afterwards.” |
The ride begins Friday in theaters. |
“You know most of the time you go to see a movie and you meet your hero the first couple of minutes, they bump into something you think they’re cute. Five minutes into it you realize they have a problem with the girl and the rest of the film is the ups and downs of them trying to get the girl. The Fountain kind of throws that all out and just gives you a completely different experience. That’s all there. There’s a great hero, Hugh Jackman. There’s a great love story with Rachel Weisz but it’s definitely shaken up and it’s a very bizarre magic carpet ride.” |
