CHRISTINA RICCI NEARLY NAKED AND CHAINED FOR REALITY

Christina Ricci wore an authentic heavy metal chain and next to nothing to make her Black Snake Moan role real.

For most of the two hours Christina Ricci is on screen in Black Snake Moan she is scantily clad either wearing Daisy Dukes and a skimpy ripped up T-shirt or trading in the shorts for underwear. Christina wanted to wear these clothes for her character Rae to show the exploitive images of women who have been abused.

Although Christina admits to being much more prudish in real life, she totally embraced wearing next to nothing without vanity.

“When you’re playing a character like this and you commit to a character like this you lose yourself, you’re not yourself. You’re not an actress especially with the weight of what this woman has suffered and what so many women have lived through and the number of abuse victims in the world. You need to commit to this and fully embrace the stuff. And to be petty in a vain way is totally inappropriate for this movie.”

For the sake of realism Christina also insisted on using a real heavy link chain instead of a prop throughout the scenes where her character is tied to a radiator by Samuel L. Jackson’s bluesman who is trying to exorcise her sexual demons.

“You know a prop made out of foam or plastic, the firs thing it does is remind you that you’re making a movie. So I wanted things to be real and I didn’t want to have to fake the weight of the chain. And the chain informed so much of the way I had to walk or move and I had to move the chain around, so much of how she would be irritated by having to put up with this. But she has such a low image of yourself that she’s like, ‘uh I’m chained.’ And I really needed that struggle to be there and I needed that weight to be there. It just made it easier.”

Christina also suffered through real bruises as a result of being tied to the 30 foot chain.
