DR DOG GETTING INDULGENT ON WE ALL BELONG
Philadelphia’s own Dr. Dog have released their latest album, titled ‘We All Belong’ and the band once again flawlessly demonstrates their intelligent songwriting ability mixed with their knack for vocal harmonization. On the band’s new album, their follow-up to 2006’s ‘Takers and Leavers’ the group finds themselves getting more indulgent in the studio with expanding beyond their customary 8 track recordings of the past. |
We caught up with guitarist and vocalist Scott McMicken of Dr. Dog to discuss the recording process on ‘We All Belong.’ |
“Essentially put very simply, just the multi tracking capability that we had. We’ve never recorded, prior to this album, anything more than eight tracks and with eight tracks, you can really only flush something out so far. But that’s not necessarily true because you can move things around but for what our eight track machine represented to us trough experience in using it a lot defined its parameters pretty quickly.” |
So with twenty four tracks does it make the recording process easier? |
“Now having twenty four tracks, that’s really where the ideas get indulgent and that’s sort of what I was talking about things we’ve always wanted to do. Simple things like, there’s so many interesting ways of getting sounds on a recording, so many interesting ways to combines sounds to make a new sound, and doubling things and just the textures and dimensions you can achieve if you have the luxury of having enough tracks. But as I said, you can do it on two tracks too, but just taking the gear for what it is made it easier for us to think more about that kind of stuff, which basically is just over dubbing and over dubbing and so forth.” |
Look for Dr.Dog at Bonnaroo this June in Tennessee, joining Tool, Widespread Panic, The Police, The White Stripes and Gov’t Mule among others. The band is also currently on a North America run of tour dates in support of ‘We All Belong’ extending until May 12th in Washington DC.
