Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Honsou are Oscar nominees for their performances in Blood Diamond. It’s the powerful story of a family man forced to mine for diamonds by South African mercenaries and the corrupt diamond dealer who ultimately joins forces with him to reclaim his life. |
Djimon talks about how shooting in his hometown of Africa affected him. |
“I’m from Africa and obviously touched by so many problems throughout the continent and this film is very powerful because it deals with the issues, not just conflict diamonds but it also deals with the issues of a child soldier, the refugees and the level of corruption.” |
Leonardo Dicaprio deserves an Oscar just for speaking with a specific South African accent which he achieved hanging out with the local mercenaries in the pubs. |
“I’ve never done anything close to this type of accent and I couldn’t have even identified a South African accent before this film. I would’ve identified it as from New Zealand or Australia. So it was a matter of really going there at least a month before hand and spending a lot of time with a lot of South African mercenaries, getting to know this sort of alien language and picking up their slang. Which is why you got to get them drunk and they really start cursing and telling you the stories and speaking in their correct tongue.” |
Hopefully the third’s the charm for Leo. He was previously nominated for The Aviator for which he won the Golden Globe and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. This is Djimon’s second Oscar nomination. He was a best supporting actor nominee for In America. |
