TOBY MAGUIRE ISN’T GOOD OR GERMAN
Toby Maguire plays a shifty Corporal in post-war Berlin in The Good German. |
It’s 1945 and Toby Maguire plays an American Corporal stationed in Berlin who is hired to chauffer George Clooney’s journalist in town covering the Potsdam Peace Conference in The Good German. |
Toby, who is neither good nor German talks about his crafty character. |
“He thinks he’s running such a good game and I think he’s pretty good to a certain level but he can’t see the whole game. He’s good for the small potatoes kind of stuff you know. But I think he thinks of himself as really sharp and kind of on top of stuff but in the film he gets in over his head. I’ve done some stuff where people get into some hot water but they have more of a normal moral compass I guess. Tully is more of a reptile by nature.” |
Toby says his character is less shady with Cate Blanchett’s prostitute who he thinks of as his girlfriend. |
“I think he thinks there’s a real relationship. I mean it’s not a conventional kind of relationship for sure but I think that he thinks that they understand each other and he can definitely leave the office outside and talk to her in his natural voice and communicate with her in a straight way.” |
The Good German which opens Friday is almost like watching Spiderman vs. Batman as Maguire gives Clooney quite a beating in several scenes. |
