FREDDIE PRINZE, JR. ‘TAWKS’ ABOUT BROOKLYN ACCENT

Freddie Prinze, Jr. retained his Brooklyn accent well after completing Brooklyn Rules.

Freddie Prinze Jr. has become a master at doing different accents. For the character in Brooklyn Rules, Freddie took on the specific speech patterns associated with the New York borough which has become known for cawfee tawk.

Freddie says he can’t shake it a year after completing the film.

“It never really went away. My voice is such a mish mash now. I did a movie where I had to have this Boston accent. It was like ‘you’re not even an American; instead of saying ‘r,’ it’s ‘wr.’ I had to be like California, hey bro what’s up? How you doing?’ Now it’ s just a mess.”

would never know from listening to Freddie that he had a thick Spanish accent growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Freddie says he had to work hard with a voice coach to lose his Latin cadence so he wouldn’t be typecast.

“I used to have a Spanish accent and I didn’t lean English until I was like 10, which by the way in school they never noticed so great education system. I went to a dialect coach just to lose that so I could get jobs that weren’t like gang members or drug dealers because if you’re Spanish in my business there’s no roles for you at all unless you’re selling crack! So I try to be as white as possible and play guys named Ryan and Zack and Biff. My voice just becomes whoever I am around.”

Freddie will have to keep up his New York accent for New York City Serenade, his next film playing an aspiring filmmaker trying to catch his lucky break.
