A FINE FRENZY LEAVING CREATIVITY TO THE MOMENT
A Fine Frenzy sit down to discuss recording their debut album, the bands first single and their showcase for the chairman of Virgin Records, in the living room. |
A Fine Frenzy is the music of 22 year old song writer Alison Sudol, who as a self taught pianist, uses her hypnotic voice and captivating piano melodies to lure fans to her music. On A Fine Frenzy’s debut album, ‘One Cell in the Sea,’ Alison and her band leave creativity to the moment and they took her songs into the studio with the songs in tack, but with room to play with the arrangements. |
We caught up with Alison to discuss the recording process of A Fine Frenzy’s debut and the fact that it was the best experience of her life. |
“Recording an album is a funny thing because you can either line every up and have everything completed pre planned out and then all the spontaneity is kind of out of it and but you know everything that you’re doing going in or you can do what we did which was leave a lot of the creativity up to the moment and kind of did a lot of it on the spot with everybody really. The songs were what they were it was just the arrangement was kind of coming along as we went. With that comes obstacles just figuring out and figuring through things and there was a lot of love in this project which meant there was a lot of passionate feelings but all in all it was the best experience of my lifetime.” |
Born in Seattle to dramatic-arts teacher parents, Alison moved to Los Angeles at the age five. Moving around a lot at an early age helped Alison develop a strong love for the literary works of CS Lewis, EB White, Lewis Carroll and Charles Dickens, while becoming a passionate author in her own right.rnA Fine Frenzy’s first single is ‘Almost Lover’ and Alison also talked about the common literary inspiration of love lost. |
“Love lost or the possibility of love lost I think. It seems to me like most people have had the ship pass in the night and had the possibility of something wonderful that didn’t come to fruition and that is what that song is. Kind of dashed hopes. It’s very sad but at the same time it’s about letting something go so it’s still hopeful in that respect.” |
In what can only be described as an absolute rarity, A Fine Frenzy performed their showcase for the Chariman of Virgin Records in Alison’s mother’s living room and the band’s magical set easily persuaded Virgin Records to sign the band within a few weeks of the showcase. Alison also talked about this incredible experience as well. |
“That was pretty crazy having the chairman of Virgin Records sitting on my couch where I hang out at night. That was pretty awesome. He’s a very warm and very funny person. So, when he walked in the door he was immediately making jokes so that kind of helped me relax a little bit and I played a set with my band. It was great and kind of magical and a few weeks later we were talking about working together.” |
A Fine Frenzy’s latest video for their second single, ‘Rangers’ is currently available now. Alison and A Fine Frenzy will be on the road supporting ‘One Cell in the Sea’ for the majority of the summer with dates beginning June 7th in San Francisco and extending until August 31st in Montreal, Quebec.
