MICHAEL MOORE RECEIVES SICK E-MAILS
Before Michael Moore began his documentary on the healthcare system he asked for horror stories and got them. |
Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore is no stranger to controversial topics and his latest target in Sicko is the American healthcare system. |
Michael says he was overwhelmed with the amount of horror stories he received from American citizens who were giving their hard earned dollars to healthcare and not reaping the benefits. |
“I put a call out on my website for people to send me their healthcare horror stories. I had no idea the amount of mail that we would receive over 25,000 e-mails in the first week from people who just wrote with such. It affected the whole staff here, reading these e-mails because these were people who either lost a loved one because they didn’t have health insurance or people that were dying even though they had health insurance. This doctor wouldn’t take the health insurance that hospital wouldn’t take. And you’re thinking if they just lived a few miles north in Canada or some other country they’d be alive or they’d be getting the help they need. Nobody would ask any questions about money or anything.” |
Michael and his staff spent the first two months sifting through tens of thousands of these horrific e-mails before they decided which stories to investigate. After completing the film Michael came up with this conclusion about America’s healthcare system. |
“This is a not only a broken system, this is a sick system. And we thought that the title of the movie became even more appropriate because the real sicko here was this system that was enacting this kind of cruelty to the people out there.” |
If you have not seen Sicko on the internet which Michael believes was an inside job, you can watch what is essentially a very scary movie on a 40-feet screen Friday when it opens in theaters nationwide. |
