MAMIE GUMMER REUNITES WITH MOM MERYL ON SCREEN

Mamie Gummer stars with her mother Meryl Streep who plays her as an older woman in Evening.

Mamie Gummer plays a young socialite about to marry a man because of status and not love in Evening. Claire Danes plays her best friend from college who comes down to their summer cottage for a weekend engagement party and will do anything to convince her not to make a mistake.

According to Mamie her advice is falling on deaf ears.

“And she knows her choices and what’s out there and yet she settles for this life that is sort of more repressed. Because that’s what I think her family wants and the pressures of the world where she was reared.”

Meryl Streep, her real life mother plays Mamie as an older woman who visits Vanessa Redgrave as an older Claire on her deathbed. Mamie says she was blown away watching the two acting veterans in that scene.

“Claire and I got together the night before we shot it and watched the dailies when my mom and Vanessa shot that scene. It was just so staggering. Claire and I were just sitting there like, just watching this scene; it was just the two of them. So we tried to emulate that but who knows if it came through.”

Mamie has acted opposite her mother before, playing Meryl’s little orange-headed baby in Heartburn. Evening opens today in theaters.
