JOHN TRAVOLTA TRANSFORMS INTO A WOMAN

John Travolta dons a 30 pound fat suit and high heels to play Edna Turnblad in Hairspray.

Hairspray has given Harvey Fierstein and the late Divine the opportunity to strut their feminine stuff on stage and screen, and now John Travolta magically transforms his leading man persona into the 300 pound full-figured Edna Turnblad for the new movie musical.

Wearing a bra, bustiere, high heels and wrapped up in a 30 pound fat suit John says he was genuinely surprised that he could pull it off

“I was very happy because on film you never doubt. First you go, ‘that’s John,’ but once you’re into it you just forget that it’s me and you just ride this trip with this very large woman. It was magical because I didn’t know if it was gonna work or not and when it all got done I put a nightgown on and I went in and I just smiled this big cheesy smile that had seven layers of chin and big cheeks and all that. It just became Edna out of nowhere she suddenly lived.”

Add in the fact that Travolta is a song and dance man going back to playing Danny Zuko in the musical Grease and he was perfect for the part.

“Basically what you’re gonna get with Hairspray is kind of like what you got with Grease. A very lighthearted deeply entertaining feel good musical that you’ll be able to watch many many times like you do Grease because it’s delightful and inviting.”

Hairspray opening Friday also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, High School Musical heartthrob Zak Efron and introducing Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad.
