SUPERBAD MAKES GOOD AT BOX OFFICE (August 20)
Superbad is number one film at the weekend box office. |
It seems the team of Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen with their brand of relatable but sophomoric humor are the winning combination with Superbad making good at the box office taking in $31 million over the weekend. |
Judd says the success is Seth’s belief in making ‘R’ rated films funny. |
“Well the whole idea of doing ‘R’ rated movies really came from Seth. I mean I have always liked working without censorship. I enjoyed it on the Larry Sanders Show and then cursing is always fun, we know that. But Seth really felt like movies should go much farther and when we were doing The 40 Year-old Virgin, a lot of the reason why it got dirty was because Seth pushed so hard on Superbad and we couldn’t get Superbad made, so we thought we might as well make 40 Year-Old Virgin dirty. And Seth thought that that would make people like it more because it gives you an ability to be more honest and to show the way people really speak. Or at least the people we know.” |
Rogen is very proud that he’s surpassed Scarface with the most number of F-words. He’s still got some catching up to do though as Nil By Mouth holds the number one title with 470, Casino with 422. Seth says no movie has really come close to capturing the experience of how they spoke. |
“But they really never just kind of captured the conversational style that me and my friends had. We were so fascinated with the fact that we could swear as much as we want and there was no parents around and we were kind of becoming a weird, retarded version of men. There were things like sex and alcohol and the joy to be able to talk about these things kind of took over and we would just swear all the time and say such filthy horrible things just ‘cause we could and it was the first time when we really could do that stuff.” |
Superbad knocked the competition up and out. Rush Hour 3 came just under with $22 million, and The Bourne Ultimatum claimed third place $19 million. |
