Already on their way to becoming the top concert draw of the year and possibly the top grossing concert tour in history, The Police have been selling out arena shows all over the world and thrilling fans that never expected to see Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland perform on stage together again. In a stunning year of reunion tours that have brought back Led Zeppelin later this year, Van Halen with David Lee Roth, The Smashing Pumpkins, Jesus and Mary Chain, Genesis, The Spice Girls and Rage Against the Machine, it has been The Police that have commanded a majority of ticket sales in a very positive year for the touring industry. As of October The Police have the top two concert grosses of 2007 with two shows in September at Twickenham Stadium in London that sold out an astonishing 104,000 seat venue on consecutive days that grossed over $15 million, backed up by two nearly sold out shows in Amsterdam that grossed $10 million less than a week later. In fact, the top 10 concert grosses for the year is littered with shows by The Police. Featuring a set list that is over 2 hours and includes songs ‘Roxanne,’ ‘Every Little Thing She Does is Magic,’ ‘Every Breath You Take’ and a slew of other hits, The Police will continue to tour with dates already booked into 2008. |
Although fans are certainly elated to have the three piece trio touring again, The Police have also self admittedly not had perfect shows at every stop. After a performance on the second show of the tour in Vancouver, Canada, Drummer Stewart Copeland unleashed a written tirade on his personal website lambasting everyone in the band including himself. With Copeland commenting that the concert was “…unbelievably lame. We are the mighty Police and we are totally at sea.” Copeland went on to bash Sting as well saying “The mighty Sting momentarily looks like a petulant pansy instead of the god of rock.” Copeland was even critical of his performance too as he admitted he tripped walking on stage, and then banged his gong at the wrong time so that “the big pompous opening to the show was a damp squib.” Copeland also went on to add that he did not hear Summers’ opening guitar riff to “Message In a Bottle,” and Sting in turn misheard Copeland’s drum intro “so we are half a bar out of sync with each other. Andy is in Idaho.” |
Things however have seemed to get better at each stop as a few weeks later, 80,000 music fans at Bonnaroo packed the stage during The Police’s set and fans continue to sell out shows at every stop. The band is currently in Europe but will play a sold out show on Halloween in New York at Madison Square Garden before making stops in The U.S., Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, New Zealand and Australia. Photographer Brian Miller was on hand for The Police’s performance June 24th at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California and captured the bands first tour together in over twenty years. |
