Singer-songwriter Emily King released her debut album, East Side Story, on August 28th on J Records. The album features production by Salaam Remi and Chucky Thompson with songwriting by King and Marsha Ambrosius of Floetry. The latest single from the project is “Walk In My Shoes.” The singer recently released a remix of the lead single featuring Chicago-based rapper Lupe Fiasco. |
King, who was born to two jazz musicians one Italian Kim Kalesti and one African American Marion Cowings, shared how her parents and eventually hip hop helped to shape her musical career. She said, |
“Yes I come from a musical family. My parents are jazz singers so I grew up around jazz, Clark Terry, Dizzy, a lot of the greats and I was fortunate enough to do that. And also you know being from New York, hip hop was my culture, is my culture. R&B, as I got into high school, rock-n-roll, and pop, different things really influenced my songwriting. All these things, I have love for all of them.” |
East Side Story also features the songs “It Was You,” which is dedicated to her parents and the song, “Business Man,” which King wrote when she was sixteen years old. |
