NICOLE KIDMAN AND JENNIFER JASON LEIGH EXPLORE SISTER ACT

Noah Baumbach whose Squid And The Whale explored the dynamic of a dysfunctional family writes about another complicated relationship, two sisters, in Margot At The Wedding. |
Baumbach’s wife Jennifer Jason Leigh and Nicole Kidman were matched perfectly for the sibling rivalry that takes place in the film on the eve of Leigh’s wedding to her slacker fiance played by Jack Black. Nicole has a very close relationship to her sister Antonia but enjoyed exploring one with conflict. |
“This is about sisters and a way in which they think they’re closer than they are. They’re close at times because of the memories they share. They can be so tough on each other because they know each other. They know how to press each other’s buttons and yet they love each other through it all. That’s interesting to me. Strangely enough my relationship with my sisters is very, very different to this film. And we’re extremely close and we hardly have any friction.” |
Jennifer who has two sisters of her own analyzes what that relationship means. |
“I think your sibling, it is the person in the world that you first have a real intimacy with and it also brings up the first times you ever experienced jealousy and rivalry and also a real kind of peership. There are like these beautifully complicated relationships that are great and for me constantly interesting to explore.” |
Kidman and Leigh developed their sisterly bond by spending all day long getting to know each other in the Hamptons house where Margot At The Wedding was shot. |
