One of the most celebrated Reggae artists in Jamaica’s history, Burning Spear (aka Winston Rodney) took home a 2009 Grammy Award for Best Reggae album for their latest album “Jah is Real.” This was Burning Spear’s second Grammy win, the first being a Grammy in 1999 for the album “Calling Rastafari.” Going up against Burning Spear in the Best Reggae album category was Elephant Man for Let’s Get Physical,” Heavy D for “Vibes,” Lee “Scratch” Perry for “Repentance,” Shaggy for “Intoxication” and Sly & Robbie for “Amazing.” |
On the red carpet before the Grammy Awards Burning Spear talked about how much a Grammy Award means to him. |
“Oh, Grammy’s this means a lot. It means that we’re doing something good. We are doing something that makes a lot of sense, musical but reaching out to the people all over the world. People can identify the quality of music and it’s all different types and I love music. Very different arrangement, lyrics and stuff like that. It’s very outstanding, it’s the essence of the whole thing. It means a lot to me and I know it also means to other musicians and singers.” |
In a ceremony not aired on live T.V. Burning Spear accepted the award for Best Reggae album and thanked his fans that have supported him over his brilliant career. |
“I would like to say thanks to my wife and our son. As an independent label, to my engineer Brian and Ted. Especially to the people who believe in what I’ve been doing over the past years. A special thanks to my fans from all over the world. Keep the spear burning. One love. Peace. Jah is real.” |
As of press time, Burning Spear are currently taking some time away from touring. Look for more tour dates to be announced in the near future. |
