TYPE O KENNY STEPS INTO SEVENTH VOID
Type O Negative’s Kenny Hickey and new bandmate Matt Brown talk about their new band Seventh Void, what Peter Steele thinks, and Vinnie Paul. |
Type O Negative’s Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly have branched out with Seventh Void, their side band. The group’s new album will come out April 21, on Big Vin Records, the new label formed by Damageplan, Hell Yeah, and ex-Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul. |
The band features Hickey on guitar and vocals, and we asked him, along with guitarist Matt Brown, if he thinks Type O fans will dig Seventh Void. |
“It’s weird. When you talk about Type O fans and how they’re going to receive this or take this, I take it with a grain of salt. Obviously, no matter what I do is going to have a huge Type O… Type O is going to have a huge impact in it musically and creatively. I mean I’ve been in the band since 1989, we’re talking twenty years here. I can’t do a song quicker than two beats per minute. It’s going to show in what I play, so as far as that goes, it think Type O fans will identify with it and understand it and appreciate it. I think Seventh Void is a different band of course. It’s not even close to being a carbon copy of Type O or anything like that, but there’s always going to be a relationship to it musically and creatively. I hope that good percentage of Type O fans will appreciate it, dig it, and like it.” |
Hickey also talked about sequencing the new album, and what Vinnie Paul thought of the sequencing. |
[Hickey] “The song that we thought was going to be the first song on the album, like, ‘This is great. This is the first song on the album,’ ended up not being.” [Brown] “We also wrote more.” [Hickey] “You write more and then you hear feedback from other people. Like Vinnie Paul was like, ‘What are you crazy? You can’t start the album with that song.’ Vinnie wanted… He wanted ‘Heaven Is Gone’ to be the first song on the album, which is like the first single. You can’t have the first single as the first song on the album. I mean you could, but… There’s a million different perspectives. This is what drove us crazy for six years! That’s why it took us so long to write the album! There’s a million possibilities!!!” |
So is Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele supportive of his bandmates in Seventh Viod? |
[Hickey] “Peter loves the s**t. Peter digs it and stuff. He’s like, ‘I’m really happy for you guys.’ In fact, Peter gave us our first two live shows ever. We opened up for Carnivore. How long ago was that? [Brown] “It was a few years ago, it seems like yesterday.” [Hickey] “He’s given us full support. He came out and sang ‘Kill All The White People’ with us, he came out and sing it. Peter’s my friend. Peter, when it comes down to it, we’ve been through a lot of s**t, there’s been a lot of craziness over the years, but in the end we’re just two jokers from Brooklyn.” |
Tune back in the next few weeks to find out about the band’s tour plans, and their six year odyssey to get the album done. |
