PEARL JAM, DAVE MATTHEWS, BLACK EYED PEAS, TENACIOUS D SHARE IN SUCCESS OF OUTSIDE LANDS
Building on the success of their first year, Outside Lands took the festival experience to a new level in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, Ca on August 27th-29th bringing together a lineup that included Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews, Tenacious D, Black Eyed Peas, Incubus, M.I.A., Tom Jones, The Mars Volta, The Dead Weather and The Silversun Pickups. With multiple stages being set up throughout the park, fans were treated to a multitude of diverse music along with San Francisco’s finest culinary delights, micro brews and wine selections from the area’s vineyards. A few of the many highlights throughout the weekend included The Black Eyed Peas and Robert Randolph sitting in with The Dave Matthews band, The legendary Welsh singer Tom Jones playing an amazing set while the sun set on Saturday, Pearl Jam closing the first night in energetic fashion, Rage Against the Machine’s guitarist Tom Morello’s new band Street Sweeper Social Club making their Northern California debut, Jack White’s new band The Dead Weather and the hilarious antics of Tenacious D who were a last minute replacement for The Beastie Boys who were forced to cancel their tour due to health issues with Adam Yauch. |
Artisan News caught up with Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine who perfomed on Saturday with his new band Street Sweeper Social Club to get his thoughts on playing in the historic Golden Gate Park and what they expect out of the crowd. |
“I played there for I think the Tibetan Freedom Concert with Rage Against the Machine in ’96 or something like that and the place went ape shit. I don’t know what to expect this time. It looked like there were a million people there and they seemed to be loving the music and I expect no less this time. We don’t expect anything less than people going crazy.” |
DJ Kilmore of Incubus also talked about San Francisco having a rich musical history that that continues to inspire with each passing generation. |
“California and especially The Bay area has such an influence on me as far as being a DJ because up here you have DJ’s that totally revolutionized the whole DJ scene. Like the Scratch Pickles and you had Q Bert and Mix Master Mike and Short Cut and Disco Flare, all those cats. And you know they changed the whole world of DJ’ing so the Bay area is pretty special for me because I got friends up here, there’s a lot of DJ’s. The music is pretty cool, there’s a pretty good Hip Hop scene, a pretty good Rock scene. So just being up here outside in the park is incredible.” |
Outside Lands also became the first festival to stream live sets via You Tube as fans were treated to high quality video feeds in the comfort of their own homes. Just a few of the other bands who performed at Outside Lands were Built to Spill, Zee Avi, Q Tip, Raphael Saadiq, Thievery Corporation, TV on the Radio, Deer Hunter, Ween, Cage the Elephant, Modest Mouse, Mastadon and Portugal. The Man, to name a few. As the Summer U.S. Festival season starts to wind down, it’s clear Outside Lands can hold it’s own with other successful festivals in America like Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Voodoo Experience and Austin City Limits. |
