TOMMY LEE AND METHODS OF MAYHEM ASK FANS FOR HELP WITH PUBLIC MAYHEM
Now is your chance to be on an album with Motley Crue’s Tommy Lee for his side-project Methods Of Mayhem and he talks about the fans’ submissions so far. |
Tommy Lee and Methods of Mayhem are in the process of finishing up their upcoming new album “Public Mayhem” and the innovative interactive concept invites fans and musicians around the globe to add their own musical ideas and send them in to the band. Isolated tracks are posted on the website www.thepublicrecord.com where participants can download the tracks and add their own musical ideas, including original recordings, song mixes, arrangements and more. The tracks are available in a wide range of formats including RiffWorks, WAV, Logic, GarageBand, ProTools and the Four Track 3.0 iPhone application. The idea for “Public Mayhem” was the brain child of producer Scott Humphrey (Mötley Crüe, Rob Zombie) and each week Tommy Lee and Scott have the task of going through thousands of new submissions to select the best of the best. |
Artisan News caught up with Tommy Lee and Scott at Tommy’s home studio to get their thoughts on doing something different by inviting their fans from all over the world to be on the album. |
“It’s all his fault. Alright. Well I don’t know we just wanted to do something different and engage the audience and get everyone involved in making a record. Yeah, it’s been nuts dude. It’s wild to see where they’re coming from. They’re coming from all over the world. People are sending in guitar solos, riffs, rhythm parts, piano parts, keyboard, synth, DJ stuff, vocals, drums, bass, everything imaginable. We got some back pipes from Scottland and we got some other weird drums from some other crazy part of the world. Really every where in the world we’re getting amazing stuff. Thousands and thousands of submissions per song.” |
Tommy Lee also talked about what an amazing experience it has been working on “Public Mayhem.” |
“You know it’s hard to pick a favorite with so many and we’re still going through them. Once a week we put a new track up and it takes us almost all of that week to go through everybody’s submissions that they send back in. It’s been the most amazing experience of making a record like this ever. I can’t even really describe it. It’s hard to explain.” |
So what has the fan reaction been to “Public Mayhem” so far? |
“On the video tape alot in text it scrolls by and it will say or they just talk in the mic and say ‘Hey, thanks for this amazing opportunity and experience man. This is the coolest thing ever that I’ve been apart of.’ To me, that is like at the end of the day ‘Pow!’ You know it doesn’t get any better than that. I tell people all the time imagine if I was fourteen years old and Led Zeppelin put up their tracks and I got to rip drums on it and send it back to them. Are you kidding me? Dude, insane! Right? Woo!” |
Methods of Mayhem broke onto the scene in 1999 with their self-titled debut, which went on to become RIAA Gold certified. The album featured Snoop Dogg, Kid Rock and Fred Durst among others. As of press time the only guest on “Public Mayhem” is Deftones lead vocalist Chino Moreno. Participants whose submissions are chosen for the album, will also have a chance to perform with the band at their record release show which be sometime in 2010. Video and sound updates are posted at ThePublicRecord.com featuring submission highlights and weekly giveaways for the best audio and video entries. A charitable donation will be made on behalf of all participants to the MusiCares Foundation. |
